Ice Tower Experience
Time: 2 hrs
When: Weeknights and Sundays
What: Learn to use axes and crampons to climb manmade ice towers of 40+ feet! Nights up north can be cold. Why not take advantage of it and try an unusual and exciting experience?
A great way to spend an evening with a friend or on a date night.
Included: All gear including boots, crampons, ice axes, and friendly guide 😊. Dress warm and bring your inner explorer.
Where: Ice Towers are located at Mt Sima Ski Hill. Meet at the Mt. Sima ski rental shop to meet your host, gear up, and have a short safety briefing. The distance from the shop to the towers is a short 100 metre walk.
Who: You don’t need to be a climber to learn to ice climb. Your guide will go over basic techniques with you and do a demonstration. All climbing is done on ropes with a qualified guide belaying you. Spend as long as you like to feel comfortable with the movement. If you are feeling more adventurous, have a go at ascending the tower. Prizes for climbers who reach the summit!
Waterfall Ice Adventure
Time: 7-8 hrs
When: Tours weekly on Fridays, or call us to book your group
What: Try the ultimate northern experience! Head into the backcountry with an experienced guide and learn to use ice climbing tools to ascend a natural waterfall.
The waterfall tour is an excellent way to learn backcountry ice climbing, as the top of each section is similar to a ledge, giving you a chance to rest, stay hydrated, and of course take photos of yourself and your friends crushing it amidst a pristine winter landscape.
Perfect for adventurous couples or a group of friends.
Where: The waterfall ice climb is in the backcountry outside of Whitehorse. We start the day by meeting at the Mt Sima Ski Hill rental shop where you will select your gear for the day.
Once we are packed and ready, the drive to the trailhead is approximately one hour.
From the trailhead we have a 40 minute hike on a snowy trail. Be prepared to carry a heavy pack containing ice axes, crampons, and your food and water for the day.
Once we reach our destination, we rope up and ascend a series of steps to reach the top of the waterfall! Your guide will assist you in tying into the rope and learning some basic ice climbing techniques.
You set the pace, and throughout the day there are plenty of opportunities for snacks, hot drinks, and photos. When we are satisfied with our waterfall adventure experience, we walk down the trail beside the waterfall (no need to rappel) and reminisce on our day as we return to the vehicle.
The climbing portion takes 3-4 hours. With gearing up, driving, and periodic rests, this is a full day tour.
Who: No climbing experience is necessary, but it will help to have a moderate fitness level and be comfortable hiking on a snowy trail.
